The Fullerton Hotel Singapore: An Ode to Historic Magnificence

The Fullerton Hotel Building, then Singapore’s New General Post Office, ca. 1930s
The Fullerton Hotel Singapore stands today as one of the most iconic luxury hotels in the city. Since its opening in 1928, this hotel has been integral to Singapore’s history and is deeply rooted in the culture of the Little Red Dot.
The Fullerton Hotel Singapore was originally built as part of a larger complex, the Fullerton Building, which served as the General Post Office, Exchange, and the Chamber of Commerce of the Straits Settlements. The building was named after Robert Fullerton, the first Governor of the Straits Settlements who was in power from 1826 to 1830.
The building itself was designed by the Shanghai-based architectural firm Keys & Dowdeswell. It was constructed by China Building Company Ltd. in a neoclassical style, with a symmetrical façade, sweeping arches and columns, and intricate detailing, which every visitor has the joy of seeing to this day.
During World War II, the Fullerton Building served as a makeshift hospital for wounded Allied soldiers, and later became the command center for the Japanese occupation forces in Singapore. It was also briefly embroiled in the middle of World War II when the Imperial Japanese Army besieged Singapore in 1942. The old post office and what is now, the Fullerton Hotel, was also bombed by the Japanese during World War II.
The hotel has gone through various changes throughout its history, however, its grandeur and elegance remain intact. It was once the favorite spot for the wealthy, the influential, and the well-connected, and today it serves as a luxury boutique hotel for discerning travelers.
